A salary, not a stipend
The Vienna BioCenter PhD is a job. Successful applicants sign a full-time employment contract with one of four research institutes on the same campus: the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA), the Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI) or the Max Perutz Labs. The pay in 2025 was EUR 39,000 to 42,900 gross a year, depending on the institute. Because it is an employment contract, it comes with health, pension, accident and unemployment insurance. The degree itself is a joint doctorate from the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna, regardless of which institute you join.
What non-EU applicants should know about fees
Tuition fees are reimbursed for the duration of the PhD, on the official applications page. The same page shows that EU/EEA citizens pay only the EUR 24.70 students’ union fee for the first eight semesters, while non-EU/EEA citizens are charged EUR 726.72 per semester, though VBC PhD students can apply for EU/EEA equal status using a researcher residence permit, which brings them under the same lower-fee rules. Ask your institute’s HR department how and when the reimbursement is actually paid. Visa and residence permit costs are normally refunded, and your future supervisor helps organise the visa from your home country before you arrive. There is no relocation flight listed among the benefits, so budget for your move to Vienna yourself.
How the autumn 2026 call runs, step by step
Applications opened on 1 September 2026 and closed on 15 October 2026 at 23:59 CET. The written application has three essays with both a minimum and a maximum length: your past research experience (600 to 2,500 characters), your scientific interests for the PhD (600 to 2,500 characters) and a motivation letter (600 to 1,500 characters). You also upload your degree certificates and transcripts, translated into English if needed (certified translation is not required at this stage), your passport and, if relevant, your residence permit. Results of the written round arrive in the second week of November. Shortlisted candidates then have online panel interviews on 24 and 25 November, meet PIs and current PhD students online on 1 December, one-on-one interviews with recruiting PIs on 4 December, and research group interviews from 7 to 11 December. Final candidates visit Vienna in December 2026 or January 2027, with travel, visa support and accommodation fully covered. The PhD can start any time up to 1 June 2027.
The reference letters are where applications fail
Both references must be submitted before you can even submit your own application, not just requested. The programme tells applicants to start before 10 October because referees take time. You register each referee with an official institutional email address in the portal; personal addresses such as Gmail or Yahoo are not accepted, and the system sends no automatic notification, so you have to email your referee yourself with the reviewer-portal link. At least one referee must have supervised you in a research project. You can swap a referee by emailing the programme directly, but not in the last week of the application period, so if you are reading this close to 15 October, contact your referees today.
Who it suits, and how it compares
You do not need a master’s degree already in hand: you can apply if you expect to finish within six months of the deadline. A four-year bachelor’s with First Class Honours is also accepted on its own. Every applicant needs more than six months of full-time research experience, and no English test certificate is required, though the programme says a formal score such as IELTS, CPE or TOEFL is recommended. You should not contact group leaders before applying, since shortlisted candidates receive the list of open positions and project descriptions before their interviews rather than choosing a lab up front. The model is close to the ISTA PhD Program, also in Austria and also built on a salary rather than a stipend, but ISTA is a separate institute with its own application and a later, 8 January 2027 deadline. If you miss this call, the Vienna BioCenter runs a spring call too, opening 1 March with a 15 April deadline each year. Reapplying after a rejection is normally not allowed, so it is worth waiting to submit a strong application rather than rushing a weak one.
