One of three easily confused Intra-Africa consortia

A second, separate Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme consortium alongside PERI-ACE and MAINSTREAM, already on this site, this one coordinated through Busitema University in Uganda with four other consortium universities: Kyambogo University, also in Uganda, Strathmore University in Kenya, Namibia University of Science and Technology, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. The three programmes are easy to confuse: same EU funding scheme, overlapping structure, different consortia, different deadlines, different priority regions.

Real per-month rates, not a vague “living stipend”

MMoCRA’s own Application Guidelines, read directly rather than the shorter scholarships page alone, give an actual formula rather than a vague figure: a monthly rate, pro-rated to the exact mobility duration, of 890 euros for master’s students, 1,230 euros for doctoral candidates and trainees, and 2,370 euros for staff, covering the round-trip flight, installation and subsistence. Tuition and insurance are covered separately from the host institution’s own budget, not out of that monthly rate. The catch is that mobility duration varies enormously by the specific listed programme, from 4 months for some master’s places up to 36 months for at least one PhD place, so two people on the “same” scholarship type can receive very different total amounts.

This is the first of several cohorts, and 38 places, not 95, are actually on offer now

The 95-place figure often quoted for this programme, 44 master’s, 12 doctoral, 20 traineeships and 19 staff, is the wider project’s total target across its full lifetime, not what you are actually competing for in this specific call. The guidelines are explicit that this round covers only the first cohort: 38 places in total, 20 master’s, 11 doctoral, 4 traineeships and 3 staff, each tied to a specific named programme at one of the five host universities, several with only one or two seats. Read the guidelines’ own programme table before choosing where to apply, since the available field, duration and seat count differ programme by programme rather than being interchangeable.

Eligibility reaches far beyond the four host countries

Eligibility here is considerably broader than the four host countries suggest. Applicants fall into one of two Target Groups: TG1 covers people already registered, admitted to, or graduated from one of the five consortium universities themselves, while TG2 opens the door to applicants from any other African university, with its own separate country list spanning East and Central Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean, Western Africa, and Northern Africa, together covering most of the continent. Women and applicants with special needs or vulnerable status, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, fragile states, or with refugee status, are explicitly encouraged to apply under the guidelines.

The deadline sits days from a similar programme’s own

The deadline, 20 September 2026, sits just three days after PERI-ACE’s own 17 September closing date for the same broader EU scheme. If you’re weighing more than one Intra-Africa consortium, keep track of which specific programme’s application form you’re actually filling in.
