What this fellowship is not: a second application

The most important thing to know about this one is what it is not: there is no separate scholarship to apply for. Every student admitted to a KAUST master’s or PhD programme automatically receives the KAUST Fellowship, with the exception of anyone funded through a specific partnership or externally sponsored programme, so the entire effort goes into the graduate admission itself, not a second application.

A “mid-August” opening date that’s already passed without an update

The 2027 cycle’s status is genuinely unclear from KAUST’s own page. It still commits only to “mid-August” for the opening, the same wording found at an earlier check, but mid-August has now passed and the page hasn’t been updated to show whether the window actually opened or the timeline slipped. The most recent completed cycle offers a rough sense of the shape a future cycle might take: the Fall intake for international applicants closed 7 May 2026, nine months after opening, while a separate Spring intake for MS/PhD and PhD applicants closed much earlier, on 1 October 2025. Treat these as a typical pattern, not confirmed 2027 dates, and check the admissions site directly for the actual current status.

An English-test exemption worth knowing about

One eligibility detail easy to miss: the TOEFL or IELTS requirement is waived entirely for applicants holding a degree from an accredited institution in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand, and KAUST does not require the GRE for admission at all. For a wider view of engineering-specific funding beyond this one university, see the guide to funding for engineering.

An unresolved inconsistency in KAUST’s own numbers

Coverage is broad on paper: full tuition, a living allowance, housing, medical and dental coverage, and relocation support. One detail is worth reading twice rather than taking at face value, and it’s still unresolved on KAUST’s own page as of this check: the page describes the living allowance as monthly, then gives the figure as an annual range of $20,000 to $30,000, which does not resolve into a single clear monthly amount. Confirm directly with KAUST what the actual monthly payment is before you rely on either number.

Founded in 2009, now ranked in the Nature Index

KAUST itself was established in 2009 as a graduate research university built to work on food, water, energy and environmental challenges facing both Saudi Arabia and the wider world, and now positions itself within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategy. By the 2022 Nature Index, KAUST ranked 1st in Saudi Arabia, 4th in Western Asia, and 152nd globally, with the university stating that 75% of its research output involves international collaboration, a reflection of how deliberately international its faculty and student body are built to be.
