You apply for a lab place, not a sum of money
The EMBL International PhD Programme is not a scholarship you win and then take to a university. It is a recruitment round for PhD positions inside EMBL’s own research groups, and the funding comes with the position as an EMBL predoctoral fellowship. EMBL does not award the degree itself: according to the programme overview, each student registers with a university of their choice, which awards the PhD, and students can also pursue a joint PhD degree from EMBL and one of its partner universities in the member states. The fellowship is awarded for 3.5 years at first, with a possible half-year extension, and EMBL says the average PhD there takes around four years.
How the 2027 winter round runs, step by step
Everything goes through the online portal at e-recruitment.embl.de, which opened on 1 September 2026. Applications sent by email are not considered. In the form you select the specific research groups you are interested in, taken from the list of recruiting group leaders for this round, which covers groups in Heidelberg, Hamburg, Barcelona, Grenoble, Rome and EMBL-EBI at Hinxton in the UK. EMBL notes that every eligible application is visible to all recruiting group leaders, so your selection signals interest rather than limiting who can pick you. Your deadline is 12 October 2026 at 23:59 CET; your referees have until 14 October. EMBL faculty then screen the written applications, and shortlisted candidates have online screening interviews between 27 October and 13 November 2026. Next comes a 30-minute Virtual Panel Assessment with group leaders on 1 December 2026, and finally in-person interview weeks: 25 to 29 January 2027 at EMBL-EBI, Barcelona, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome, and 1 to 4 February 2027 at Heidelberg. The start date is flexible, but no later than October 2027.
Small mistakes that cost applicants their place
The form itself is the application. EMBL says it evaluates applications on the information typed into the form fields, and that an uploaded CV does not replace missing information. You can upload at most five PDF documents of 2 MB each. Reference letters are only accepted from institutional email addresses, so a letter sent from a lecturer’s personal Gmail or Yahoo account will not count. If a referee has no institutional address, they must email a signed and stamped PDF to graduate-office@embl.org with your application ID. Since the reference deadline is only two days after yours, contact your referees now, not after you submit. You can edit your application until the deadline, but you will never see the letters themselves. EMBL charges no application fee at any stage, so anyone asking you to pay to apply is not EMBL.
What member-state priority means if you apply from Africa or Asia
EMBL welcomes applicants of every nationality, but its application page states that “as a general rule priority will be given to member state applicants, if equally qualified.” Its member states page lists 29 member states, all of them European apart from Israel, with Australia as an associate member. No African, South Asian or Southeast Asian country is on that list. The wording matters: the priority applies only when two candidates are equally qualified, and EMBL says applications are judged on qualification and scientific potential. For a strong applicant from Nigeria, Kenya or Pakistan, this is a real but narrow disadvantage, not a bar.
How the money works, and what the pages do not say
The stipend is set per country and rises as you progress. EMBL’s rate sheet effective from 1 July 2025 lists, for the first nine months (until you pass the Qualifying Assessment), EUR 2,520.49 a month in Germany, EUR 2,231.50 in France, EUR 1,975.77 in Italy, EUR 2,014.23 in Spain and GBP 2,070.72 in the UK, with a one-off start-up payment on top. The monthly amount then rises in three further steps up to month 48. These rates may be revised before a 2027 start, so treat them as a guide. EMBL’s pages do not say who pays for travel to the in-person interview week, and cover no detail on visas, relocation or university registration fees. Ask graduate-office@embl.org before you book anything. For how PhD stipends compare with tuition-only awards, see the guide to how PhD funding actually works.
Not only for biologists
About 85% of current students come from biology, but EMBL says it actively encourages candidates trained in chemistry, physics, mathematics, molecular medicine, computer science and engineering. A computational or quantitative background is a realistic way in. You do not need a master’s degree if your bachelor’s already qualifies you for PhD entry in the country where you earned it, and there is no strict age limit. If you miss this round, EMBL runs two recruitment rounds a year, and you may reapply by filling in a new form.
