Narrower than most aggregator listings imply

AIT’s own scholarship page is worth reading closely before you budget around it, because it says something narrower than most aggregator listings imply. The award covers full or partial tuition fees only, AIT’s own wording, and qualified students are still responsible for a 20,000 Baht per semester registration fee to maintain student status, plus living costs AIT estimates at 11,500 to 15,000 Baht a month. Anyone planning around a “fully funded” listing elsewhere will be short by both of those for the whole degree.

How the award amount actually gets decided

The award is decided once, before enrolment, by the Selection Committee of whichever Faculty or School you apply to, then approved by that School’s Dean, and AIT states outright that it cannot be changed for the rest of your study period, so there is no later opportunity to negotiate a bigger package. There is no service bond attached, and eligibility runs on English test scores (IELTS or AIT’s own EET) plus, for PhD applicants, specific GPA thresholds in both the master’s and the undergraduate degree.

Founded by treaty, not by a single government

AIT’s origin is unusual for a university: it began in 1959 as the SEATO Graduate School of Engineering, established by Royal Decree of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand after the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization’s member governments, including Australia, France, New Zealand, the UK and the US, agreed to found a regional engineering school. It became independent of SEATO in 1967 under its own Thai legislation, taking the Asian Institute of Technology name it carries today. That treaty-organization origin is part of why AIT still frames its mission around training professionals for the Asian region specifically, rather than functioning as an ordinary national university with an open international admissions policy. For a wider view of engineering-specific funding beyond this one institution, see the guide to funding for engineering.

No new deadline published yet

The one published deadline on this page, 15 July 2026 for an August 2026 intake, has already passed by the time of this listing, and AIT has not posted a date for its next intake here. If you are counting on this scholarship, check ait.ac.th/financial-aid/ directly rather than assuming a pattern.
