## Who can apply

- Open to candidates worldwide: funded studentships are available regardless of nationality
- A 1st or a good 2:1 degree, or an equivalent overseas qualification, held or about to be achieved
- Two academic referees (one can be the supervisor of an industrial or research placement) who must submit by 1 December 2026 at 09:00 GMT: without both references the application is not processed
- Non-native English speakers must meet the University of Cambridge's English language requirements before they can be admitted to Cambridge, not before applying to the Sanger Institute
- Selected candidates must also be admitted to the University of Cambridge: you cannot take up the studentship without that admission

### You apply to the programme, not to a supervisor

Many PhD applicants spend months emailing professors to secure a supervisor before they apply. This programme works differently. You apply to the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s four-year PhD programme as a whole, and on the form you pick three Faculty members whose research interests you from a dropdown list. You then spend the first eight months doing three rotation projects in different research groups, and at least one must be computational or informatics work and one experimental laboratory work. You choose your thesis lab by mutual consent with the supervisor during the third rotation. So you do not need a confirmed supervisor to apply, and cold emails to staff are not part of the process.

### Two deadlines, one week apart

The application closes on Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 09:00 GMT. Your two academic referees then have until Tuesday 1 December 2026 at 09:00 GMT to submit their references through the institute’s online system. The institute says without both references your application will not be processed, and that making sure they arrive is your responsibility. It also warns that the final date for references is only one week after the application deadline, so do not leave the application to the last minute. Note that 09:00 GMT is 10:00 in Lagos, 12:00 in Nairobi and Addis Ababa, 14:00 in Karachi and 16:00 in Jakarta, so the deadline falls in the middle of your working day, not at midnight. Ask your referees early and send them the date in writing, and give an institutional email address for each. Request your university transcript as a PDF before you start, because you must upload it. If you are still studying, upload a transcript with the marks you have so far.

### What the money covers, and what it does not

Funded students have their full University of Cambridge tuition fees paid and receive a tax-free stipend, which the institute lists as £25,649 in the first year rising to £27,385 in the fourth, as of October 2026. International students are reimbursed for visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs, which together are a significant cost: see our [guide to studying in the UK](https://worldwide-scholarships.com/studying-in-the-uk-funding-visas-and-how-the-money-works/) for current figures. There is also up to £1,500 a year in years two to four for attending scientific meetings. The programme pages do not mention a flight to the UK or a settling-in allowance, so plan for those yourself. Only 12 funded studentships are offered across all research areas, and applicants who have their own external funding still apply in the usual way and go through the same selection.

### What the form asks for, and the rule on AI

The form asks for your motivation for a PhD and why this programme (150 words), your research interests and why you chose your three potential supervisors (200 words), how your studies and technical skills relate to your interests (150 words), up to three periods of research or work experience (120 words each) and experiences beyond your studies that will help you succeed (150 words). It also has optional sections for awards and for publications or presentations, asks for two referees and a PDF transcript, and includes an equal opportunities form. With such tight limits, specific detail about what you did in a project counts for more than general enthusiasm. The institute also states that your application should authentically represent your own motivations and experience, and that you should not submit AI-generated content as your own work or use AI to misrepresent your experience.

### Interviews, and the step after Sanger

Shortlisted candidates are invited to interview on Monday 25 January 2027. The institute plans these in person, with two interviews with individual Faculty members and one panel interview, and offers videoconference interviews in the preceding two weeks if you cannot attend that day. Selection by the institute is not the end. Successful candidates must then apply to the University of Cambridge through its Applicant Portal and be admitted, because the degree awarded is a University of Cambridge PhD and every student becomes a member of a Cambridge college. Applying to the Sanger Institute is free, and applying to Cambridge costs £20. You do not need an English test result to apply to the institute, but if you receive an offer you must meet Cambridge’s English requirements before admission. The institute says Cambridge’s own funding schemes usually expect you to have a confirmed supervisor, which is why they are not suitable for applicants to this programme.

### How it differs from EMBL’s PhD programme

Readers who looked at the [EMBL International PhD Programme](https://worldwide-scholarships.com/scholarships/embl-international-phd-programme/) will find this one similar in spirit: a research institute PhD in molecular life sciences, open to all nationalities, with a single central application. The practical differences are that the Sanger programme leads to a Cambridge degree, includes rotations before you choose a lab, and requires the second step of Cambridge admission. EMBL’s 2027 winter round has already closed, so for an applicant aiming at a 2027 start, the Sanger deadline is the live one.

If you are also considering the [Francis Crick Institute PhD programme](https://worldwide-scholarships.com/scholarships/francis-crick-institute-phd-programme-and-studentship/) in London, note that its deadline is earlier, 3 November 2026, and that you choose supervisors and their advertised positions at the application stage.

Where this comes from

Every fact above was read on **sanger.ac.uk**, the awarding body's own website, and last confirmed on **23 October 2026**. Nothing here is taken from another directory. Funding bodies change deadlines and eligibility rules without notice, and we are not affiliated with Wellcome Sanger Institute. Always confirm on the official site before you apply.
