What you get

A cash grant of EUR 3,000 to 22,000 for one year, paid directly to the student to spend as they choose. Tuition fees and other study-related costs are not paid on the student's behalf. For a two-year master's, a second year of the same amount is possible only if the student has an average grade of 7 out of 10 and at least 50% of European Credits by the end of the third quartile of year one. UTS recipients starting in September 2027 may also be considered for the additional Kipaji Scholarship, which carries its own separate requirements.

Covers

## Who can apply

- (Provisionally) admitted to a qualifying UT master's programme starting in academic year 2027/2028 (September); results of the scholarship application can take up to 8 weeks
- Hold a UT student number, obtained after applying separately for course admission; the scholarship application is a separate procedure from course admission
- Not a graduate of a UT undergraduate or graduate programme
- Meet Dutch entry-visa conditions if applicable
- English proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.5 (or TOEFL iBT 90), with a speaking subscore of at least 6.0 (TOEFL iBT 20)
- Not eligible for a Dutch study loan
- Among the best 5 to 10 percent of the graduation class at the applicant's home university
- Not available to Dutch students, current UT students, EU/EEA students, or non-EU/EEA students who hold a Dutch residence permit making them eligible for the statutory (EU) tuition fee
- Only one UT scholarship may be held at a time; a recipient who becomes eligible for the statutory tuition fee during their studies must inform the UT Scholarship Coordinator, which cancels the scholarship

### This is compensation for costs, not a full scholarship

The University of Twente’s own page is explicit about what this is not: “This scholarship is meant as a compensation for study related costs” and, separately, “The scholarship is not a full scholarship.” No costs, including tuition, are paid on your behalf; the money goes to you directly as a cash grant, and you decide how to spend it. Before applying, the university’s own guidance tells you to add up your full costs of study and living in the Netherlands and be certain you can cover whatever the scholarship doesn’t, since “when they cannot they should not apply for the UTS.”

### Two separate applications, in a fixed order

Applying for the scholarship and applying for the master’s programme are two entirely separate procedures, and they have to happen in a fixed order. You need a (provisional) admission letter and a UT student number before you can even submit the scholarship application, so course admission comes first regardless of how ready your scholarship materials are. Budget time for the admission decision itself to take up to eight weeks.

### A hard line on who pays what tuition rate

Eligibility here is not simply “non-EU.” The university draws the real line at who pays the statutory tuition fee, the rate that usually applies to EU/EEA students. If you are a non-EU/EEA national but hold a Dutch residence permit that makes you eligible for that statutory rate, you are excluded from the UTS entirely. That distinction matters mid-scholarship too: if you become eligible for the statutory fee at any point during your studies, you are required to tell the UT Scholarship Coordinator, and doing so cancels the scholarship and all further payments immediately.

### The second year of funding isn’t automatic

For a two-year master’s, a second year of UTS funding is not guaranteed just because you received it in year one. You need an average grade of 7 out of 10 and at least 50% of the year’s European Credits by the end of the third quartile of your first year to keep it going. Treat the first year’s academic performance as a condition of the second year’s money, not a separate concern from it.

### A narrower add-on scholarship exists for a September 2027 start

If your programme starts specifically in September 2027, UTS recipients may also be considered for a further, separate Kipaji Scholarship, which carries its own additional requirements beyond the UTS criteria. You have to apply for the UTS itself first to be eligible, and if you think you qualify, the university’s own advice is to flag your interest directly in your application motivation rather than assume it will be picked up automatically.

Where this comes from

Every fact above was read on **utwente.nl**, the awarding body's own website, and last confirmed on **14 September 2026**. Nothing here is taken from another directory. Funding bodies change deadlines and eligibility rules without notice, and we are not affiliated with University of Twente. Always confirm on the official site before you apply.
