What you get

OIST states that its PhD Program is fully funded for all students regardless of nationality, and that the funding covers full tuition. Financial support starts at approximately 2.6 million JPY (taxable) in the first year and rises with academic progress to approximately 3.6 million JPY (taxable), paid as an OIST Research Assistantship or Teaching Fellowship. Subsidised furnished campus housing (currently 21,600 yen a month for a single apartment, or 18,000 yen a month per person for a shared two-room apartment). A one-way ticket to Okinawa from the airport closest to the student, plus reimbursement of relocation expenses up to set maximums. Conference and research travel is budgeted separately. Personal accident (Gakkensai) and liability insurance.

- Non-refundable application fee of 5,000 JPY; no fee waivers are offered

### One deadline, three possible start dates

OIST runs a single application round for all three of its next intakes. The deadline is 15 November 2026 at 23:59 Japan time (UTC+9), and successful applicants can enrol on 1 May 2027, 1 September 2027 or 1 January 2028. There is no separate round for the later start dates, so someone who wants to begin in January 2028 still has to apply by this November. Japan time is ahead of most of Africa and South Asia, so the portal closes during the afternoon of 15 November in Lagos or Nairobi. Aim to submit a day early.

### Your referees have the same deadline as you

The most common way to lose an application here has nothing to do with your research. OIST’s FAQ says the deadline for recommendation letters is the same as the application deadline. You need at least two letters in English from professorial-level faculty, and up to five are accepted. If a referee sends a letter on 16 November, it is late. Ask your referees now, give them the date in Japan time, and follow up in early November. The 5,000 yen application fee is not refundable and OIST does not offer fee waivers, so check that you can pay it online before the final week.

### Do not email professors first

Many PhD systems expect you to find a supervisor before you apply. OIST asks the opposite. Its FAQ says: “please refrain from contacting faculty to obtain their approval or support prior to applying.” Supervision is decided only after you have applied and gone through the admissions process. What you can do is read OIST’s published list of faculty members and its supervision availability page, and name the units whose work fits you in your statement of purpose. That statement is limited to 800 words, so it has to be specific. The first year is built around rotations in three different research units, and there are no departments, so a statement that shows you can work across disciplines fits the programme better than one tied to a single narrow topic.

### How selection works after you submit

According to the application page, OIST sends shortlisting results in late December 2026. Shortlisted applicants attend the Admissions Workshop 2027, held online by video conference, with interviews between 18 January and 7 February 2027. Final results are due in mid-February 2027. Because the workshop is online, you do not need a visa or flight to be considered. After enrolment, the programme lasts five years: courses and rotations in year one, a qualifying examination in year two that leads to candidacy, and thesis research from then on.

### What the money looks like in practice

OIST describes its PhD as fully funded, and its FAQ says the funding covers full tuition and ensures a comfortable living standard. The support is a salary, not a tax-free stipend. It starts at approximately 2.6 million yen a year, is taxable, and rises to approximately 3.6 million yen as you progress. Housing is not free, but it is heavily subsidised: a furnished single apartment on campus currently costs 21,600 yen a month, and students are expected to live on campus for at least the first year. OIST books and pays for a one-way flight to Okinawa, including for a spouse and children, and reimburses shipping of household goods up to a maximum that depends on your country. Students cannot take part-time work elsewhere. ### How it differs from a MEXT scholarship

Applicants often treat OIST and the Japanese government MEXT scholarship as alternatives to each other. They are different routes. MEXT is a government scholarship that usually goes through a Japanese embassy and then places you at a university. OIST is a single graduate university that funds its own students directly, with no embassy step and no nationality quota. If you are aiming at a science PhD in Japan, you can apply to OIST in parallel with the [MEXT Scholarship for Research Students](https://worldwide-scholarships.com/scholarships/mext-scholarship-for-research-students-embassy-recommendation/), since the two timetables and application systems are separate.

Where this comes from

Every fact above was read on **oist.jp**, the awarding body's own website, and last confirmed on **25 September 2026**. Nothing here is taken from another directory. Funding bodies change deadlines and eligibility rules without notice, and we are not affiliated with Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST). Always confirm on the official site before you apply.
