# Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Undergraduate Students (Embassy Recommendation)

A Japanese government undergraduate scholarship applied for only through your own country's Japanese embassy or consulate, never directly to MEXT. Covers a monthly stipend, full tuition, and airfare to and from Japan, over a 4-to-7-year period depending on your field and route.

Checked 19 Sept 2026

- **Deadline:** Deadline not announced
- **Study in:** Japan
- **Level:** Undergraduate
- **Covers:** Tuition fees, Living costs, Travel

**Why there is no date here.** There is no single worldwide deadline. The official Study in Japan page states: 'Recruitment for those arriving in Japan next April is made between April and May of the previous year. First screening is conducted between May and August by the Japanese Embassies or Consulates General. As the application process and specific schedule differ according to the country of your nationality, please inquire the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your country for details.' The published guidelines and forms are for FY2027 (arrival from April 2027); embassy-specific deadlines checked for that round (e.g. India 25 May 2026, Malaysia 8 April 2026, Singapore 24 June 2026) have already closed. No central date for a following round is published on studyinjapan.go.jp. Contact the Japanese embassy or consulate in your own country of nationality directly for the current window.

What you get

A monthly allowance of 117,000 yen, plus a supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen per month for grantees in specially designated regions (subject to change each fiscal year at the Japanese government's discretion). Entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees at the university are all waived. MEXT provides an economy-class airline ticket to Japan for arrival within the specified window, and a return economy ticket home at the end of the scholarship if the grantee returns then; domestic transport to/from airports, airport taxes, travel insurance and baggage costs are the grantee's own expense. Scholarship period: 5 years (April 2027 to March 2032) including a one-year Japanese-language preparatory course for those not directly placed, or 7 years for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or a six-year pharmacy course; grantees placed directly into a university without the preparatory year get 4 years (6 years for those same professional fields).

Covers

- Tuition fees
- Living costs
- Travel

## Who can apply

- National of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan; not a Japanese national at time of application (narrow dual-nationality exception applies)
- In principle, born on or after 2 April 2002; must be at least 18 at the time of university admission
- Completed, or on track to complete by March 2027 (August 2027 for autumn direct placement), 12 years of schooling outside Japan, or an accepted equivalent
- Willing to learn Japanese and, in principle, to study in Japanese
- Must submit a health certificate in the prescribed format, signed by a physician
- Must be able to arrive in Japan between 1 and 7 April 2027 (standard track)

### Never send anything to MEXT directly

The official page is blunt about this: “DO NOT send any application documents directly to MEXT in Japan.” Every document, from the application form to the health certificate to the recommendation letter, goes to the Japanese embassy or consulate general in the country of your nationality, not to Tokyo. That embassy runs the entire first stage of selection, including a written academic examination and an interview, before recommending successful applicants on to MEXT for a second screening. Passing the embassy’s own screening does not guarantee a MEXT scholarship; MEXT makes the final selection and decides which university each grantee attends.

### Two very different routes into the same scholarship

Most grantees spend their first year at a MEXT-designated preparatory institution (ABK College for Social Sciences and Humanities students, Osaka University for Natural Sciences students), taking an intensive Japanese-language course before sitting a university entrance exam. That route runs five years in total, seven for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or a six-year pharmacy course. A smaller group qualifies for direct placement, skipping the preparatory year entirely, usually because they already have sufficient Japanese (or are entering a university course that itself requires no Japanese proficiency); that route is four years, six for the same professional fields, and can start from the spring or autumn term depending on the university’s calendar. Direct placement is decided separately, in consultation between MEXT and the receiving university, after the first screening, and the window for that consultation runs “from after the Second Screening to February 12, 2027.”

### The stipend figure is exact, but not guaranteed to hold

MEXT’s own guidelines commit to a specific number, 117,000 yen a month, but attach a real caveat to it: “due to the situation of the Japanese Government’s budget, the amount of payment may be subject to change each fiscal year.” Treat the current figure as accurate for FY2027 applicants and confirm it hasn’t moved before budgeting years in advance. On top of the stipend, tuition, matriculation and entrance-exam fees are waived outright, and MEXT covers an economy flight in each direction, but not the traveler’s own domestic transport to the airport, travel insurance, or baggage costs, all of which the guidelines list as the grantee’s responsibility.

### The nationality rule has more edge cases than it looks

Beyond the basic “nationals of countries with diplomatic relations with Japan” rule, the guidelines carve out a specific, narrow path for dual nationals: someone holding both Japanese and another nationality can apply, but only if they live outside Japan at the time of application and formally give up their Japanese nationality before arriving in Japan to take up the scholarship. There’s a matching age exception too: the standard cutoff (born on or after 2 April 2002) can be waived for applicants who missed it because of circumstances like mandatory military service or wartime disruption to their education, but MEXT explicitly states that personal circumstances, financial hardship, family situation, health, or job constraints, are not grounds for that exception.

### Bring cash for the gap before your first payment

One practical detail easy to miss in the fine print: MEXT’s own notes state the first scholarship instalment lands “one month to one and a half months after the grantee’s arrival in Japan,” and recommend arriving with at least roughly US$2,000 in hand to cover the gap. Scholarship payments only go into an account opened at Japan Post Bank after arrival, so this isn’t a paperwork step that can be sped up from outside Japan.

Where this comes from

Every fact above was read on **studyinjapan.go.jp**, the awarding body's own website, and last confirmed on **19 September 2026**. Nothing here is taken from another directory. Funding bodies change deadlines and eligibility rules without notice, and we are not affiliated with Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan. Always confirm on the official site before you apply.
